Chord charts and changing key mid-service

Chords live in the lyrics in brackets, Enhance Chords lines up a pasted chord sheet, and the Stage tab moves the whole song to a new key while it is live.

  1. See a song's chords
  2. Paste a chord sheet
  3. Change key during the service

Chords are stored inside the lyrics, in square brackets just before the word they land on: [Am], [C/E], [Fmaj7]. Each chord stays attached to its syllable, so nothing drifts when a line wraps differently on another screen. The congregation only ever sees the words; the band sees the chords on the stage screen.

Watch: Chord charts and changing key mid-service (about 2 minutes)

See a song's chords

  1. In the Songs tab, right-click the song and choose Edit Song.
  2. Each section shows its words with the chords in brackets.
  3. In the preview on the right, open Page to read the song as a chord chart.
Preview another key (1), show or hide chords (2), and read the chart on the Page tab (3).

The – and + beside the key preview the chords in another key. This only changes the preview: the song stays saved in the key you wrote it in. Chords shows or hides them.

Paste a chord sheet

Most chord sheets put the chords on their own line, above the words. Paste one into a section as it is, then click Enhance Chords above the sections. ChristChant works out which word each chord sits over and turns the sheet into bracket chords, so the slides show only the words and the band gets a proper chart.

Paste the sheet into a section (1), then click Enhance Chords (2).
  • Slash chords, sus2/sus4, add and altered chords are all recognised.
  • Both ♯ and ♭ are understood, as well as # and b.
  • Section headers stay section headers rather than being read as chords.

Change key during the service

  1. With the song live, click the Stage tab of the monitor at the top right. This is what the band is reading.
  2. Under the stage preview, click the up or down arrow. Each click moves the key one semitone, and the number between them shows how far you've moved.
  3. The stage screen updates straight away: the chords, the next slide and the key. The congregation's screen does not change.
  4. Click the reset arrow beside them to go back to the written key.
  5. A worship leader with a paired phone can transpose too, so the call can come from the stage rather than the booth.
Open the Stage tab (1), then transpose with the arrows (2). Chords never appear on the congregation's screen.
